Once again, Tumblr has raised an additional $30 million from investors to help keep the site going.
As the site still lacks a business model with no premium subscriptions or free ad-supported service and [almost] relying solely on selling equity to raise capital from investors, I can’t help but be a little worried with the future of this site.
Even if Tumblr has already managed to break into Alexa’s Top 100 visited sites on the Internet, what good is all that traffic if you can’t profit from it?
Socket Load Testing (Join Us).
I think the server was overloading due to Unix Socket connections not ending so I’d like to try another round of stress testing. Feel free to jump on. If a lot of people come on and it doesn’t crash, I’ll start developing rooms. How is that for incentive?
Remember kids, you must have Chrome or Safari. Whiners and griefers will be banned by moderators. Please don’t ask dumb questions.
Help a genuinely nice guy out by (somewhat) stress testing his new Tumblr Chat app. It’s pretty darn good too :)
I want more details on the [relatively] new Tumblr crushes system
If Tumblr is going to provide me with statistics about my activity with other users by providing me with exact percentages, I’d at least like to know what those percentages equate to and over what duration.
From what I’ve gathered, these values are a percentage of likes/reblogs/any form of activity with that particular user’s posts from the last 30 days… but I could be wrong.
Oh the worries in a geek’s mind.
Anyway, besides having my ideas stolen, I shall present you with my new percentage-based crushes:
- KG (Duh.)
- Patricia (Would it be a complement to suggest I wouldn’t even know how to describe her due to how incredibly diverse she is?)
- Kelsey (The biggest surprise on my list with the new crushes system, she’s relatively new to my dashboard and totally fucking awesome. By that I mean going by her posts she is theoretically half-British, and that’s always a good thing in my books!)
- Alex (Weezer fan, check. Likes hockey, check. Passion for memes, check. Fellow bro, check. Everything you need to make an awesome guy)
- Karthik (My incredibly verbose American brother whose posts are of the highest quality you’ll ever find on Tumblr)
- Justin (A lover of sports who also happens to post whatever he wants, however he wants, whenever he wants. For that alone without even having to mention his many other awesome characteristics I admire him)
- Darren (Essentially the male equivalent of KG, he’s a sassy drama queen… and he knows it! Haven’t had the pleasure of talking to him outside of Tumblr yet. One day on one of those hilarious-looking Tinychat conversations of yours?)
- Kelly (A crazy and intense girl who seems to be a tonne of fun to hang out with, she works as a lifeguard and has some great stories from it too. She’s a really open individual when it comes to blogging who posts a tonne of photos too which is always awesome and is definitely someone I’d like to get to know better.)
- Staff (Yup, the people who run the place. They’re occasionally nice when they update their API to match the current feature set. Besides that, they’re reading my blog for my many ideas on improving Tumblr and doing their best to keep the site from going down, hah. Despite that you’re still the best social network out there so I tip my hat to you sirs.)
We’ve fixed a few issues that were making “Tumblr crushes” less fun than they should be:
1)
Once you’ve liked a few hundred posts, your Crushes rarely change. Now they’re pulled from your recent activity, so you can see where your love is going right this second.
2)
Crushes only count Likes, and don’t factor in Reblogs. Now they include both!
3)
The total counts don’t give context to all the other blogs you follow. The counts now show the percentage of your attention that you’re giving your crushes. (Out of everyone you Like and Reblog!)
4)
Calculating crushes kills our databases.Crushes now run on an asynchronous queue that refreshes every 12 hours.
You have got to be kidding me.
I recommended all of these changes to crushes ages ago and brought it up in a conversation with KG one time. Ask her yourself if you don’t believe me.
Damn them for stealing all my good ideas! Tags in dashboard, replies, built-in FormSpring and now this. Plus the many bugs I’ve found with Tumblr, I swear they should hire me pronto.
The only difference with my recommendation was to enable users to view crushes by counts and by percentages by rolling their mouse over or by toggling a radio button or something. The codebase was already there so they might as well provide fellow Tumblr users with options.
A faulty network switch is causing severe performance issues this morning. We’re working with our datacenter to get it replaced as quickly as possible.
We’re incredibly sorry for the trouble, and appreciate your patience.

Congratulations to Lorraine Coolidge and Wood Simmons for winning the Tumblr t-shirt design contest. As winners, they will each received 25 t-shirts of their winning design to share with their friends.
For those of you not lucky enough to be friends with the winners, Lorraine’s Houses and Wood’s Connecting are both available for purchase in the Tumblr store on BustedTees.
A big thanks goes out to Tumblr and all of you that submitted and voted for your favorite designs.
Congratulations! I especially like the Connecting design and how the graphic is off-centred from the middle of the t-shirt, though I’d personally like to see it printed on the same navy as the Faux Logo t-shirt.
To demonstrate what’s possible with Tumblr’s new OAuth support, we threw together Tumblr Counter to generate a follower counter that can be embedded anywhere.
Here’s the Tumblr Counter for We Heart Tumblr:
Remember, even Tumblr’s official iPhone app started as an indie project. This is just the beginning! To get started, register your app.
Developers, join us on developers.tumblr.com and share your Tumblr apps, experiments, tips, snippets, and ideas.
Yes! Great to see a developer community forming on here. Looking forward to seeing what the community will post. I’ll have to put some effort in to writing a couple of posts or applications myself over the next few weeks.
