I’m in a niche gaming mood tonight, and to celebrate the flop that is DJ Hero, I thought I’d share with you how DJ games (or even music games in general) are really done.
You see, people see the original Guitar Hero on PlayStation 2 as a whole new type of game yet most do not realise that this is certainly not the case. Developer Bemani alongside publisher Konami have been pumping out music games in Japanese arcades for the last 12 years spawning over 17 GuitarFreaks/DrumMania games as well as countless Beatmania IIDX games.
So when we come to moan about how difficult Dragonforce’s “Through The Fire And Flames” is on Expert, most Beatmania/GuitarFreaks/DrumMania players simply laugh in your face, telling you not to even attempt the horrors that lie within the Bemani music games.
For an idea of how good you have to be, say if you were to hit every single note within a song but (depending on the song) miss some of the last 10, 15 or 20 notes, you’d still fail the song. Therefore, you really have to ensure you keep ridiculously long combos towards the end to pass the song.
Anyway, here’s perhaps my favourite Beatmania IIDX video on the Internet. It showcases some of the greatest gaming skills you’ll have ever seen, and it certainly puts DJ Hero in it’s pathetic underselling place.
