Anyway, besides having my ideas stolen, I shall present you with my new percentage-based crushes:

KG (Duh.)

Patricia (Would it be a complement to suggest I wouldn’t even know how to describe her due to how incredibly diverse she is?)

Kelsey (The biggest surprise on my list with the new crushes system, she’s relatively new to my dashboard and totally fucking awesome. By that I mean going by her posts she is theoretically half-British, and that’s always a good thing in my books!)

Alex (Weezer fan, check. Likes hockey, check. Passion for memes, check. Fellow bro, check. Everything you need to make an awesome guy)

Karthik (My incredibly verbose American brother whose posts are of the highest quality you’ll ever find on Tumblr)

Justin (A lover of sports who also happens to post whatever he wants, however he wants, whenever he wants. For that alone without even having to mention his many other awesome characteristics I admire him)

Darren (Essentially the male equivalent of KG, he’s a sassy drama queen… and he knows it! Haven’t had the pleasure of talking to him outside of Tumblr yet. One day on one of those hilarious-looking Tinychat conversations of yours?)

Kelly (A crazy and intense girl who seems to be a tonne of fun to hang out with, she works as a lifeguard and has some great stories from it too. She’s a really open individual when it comes to blogging who posts a tonne of photos too which is always awesome and is definitely someone I’d like to get to know better.)

Staff (Yup, the people who run the place. They’re occasionally nice when they update their API to match the current feature set. Besides that, they’re reading my blog for my many ideas on improving Tumblr and doing their best to keep the site from going down, hah. Despite that you’re still the best social network out there so I tip my hat to you sirs.)

A faulty network switch is causing severe performance issues this morning. We’re working with our datacenter to get it replaced as quickly as possible.

We’re incredibly sorry for the trouble, and appreciate your patience.

bustedtees:

Congratulations to Lorraine Coolidge and Wood Simmons for winning the Tumblr t-shirt design contest.  As winners, they will each received 25 t-shirts of their winning design to share with their friends.
For those of you not lucky enough to be friends with the winners, Lorraine’s Houses and Wood’s Connecting are both available for purchase in the Tumblr store on BustedTees.
A big thanks goes out to Tumblr and all of you that submitted and voted for your favorite designs.

Congratulations! I especially like the Connecting design and how the graphic is off-centred from the middle of the t-shirt, though I’d personally like to see it printed on the same navy as the Faux Logo t-shirt.

Developers: OAuth support
For increased security and more resilient third-party apps, we’ve started early testing of OAuth support in the Tumblr API.
We’ve modeled our implementation after Twitter’s in many ways, supporting OAuth 1.0a with optional xAuth, upon request, where it makes sense such as mobile and native applications.
The existing authentication methods in the API are still supported for now, but we encourage developers to migrate to OAuth when possible.
To get started with Tumblr’s OAuth, integrate an OAuth consumer library into your project and get a consumer key by registering your app.
This is still in its early testing stages, so please report any issues. Thanks.

I’ve not written any software that implements OAuth yet so I’ll definitely give this one a whirl with some of my own Tumblr apps soon. This sure beats the current method for an authenticated read using POST requests with custom headers on an insecure connection passing along fellow user’s login details in plain text (I was surprised that you guys never implemented TLS/SSL).
It’s also great to see OAuth libraries available for so many platforms and APIs. Hell, there’s even an OAuth library for the .NET Compact Framework. Not that anyone actually cares about Windows Mobile but still, choice is indeed nice.
Next thing on your list of things to sort out in the API is replies! Seriously, they’re one of the most used features on Tumblr and devs can’t even implement them. Second on your list is Message/Ask; another highly popular feature that even the iPhone optimised page doesn’t feature. Finally, for the complete package, allow direct video uploads to Tumblr as opposed to using embed or data (that just uploads to Vimeo anyway).

So jump pagination is pretty cool, but could you guys please add support for first and last page jumps? First page is obviously a no-brainer as we can literally link to the root of our Tumblr URL, but it’d be pretty sweet to see {LastPage} for our pagination blocks.

Any HTML advice on getting the Tumblr Ask section to show up like you did as an embeddable widget within your theme? Thanks!

I’ve been asked by several members about how I implemented my Ask box on my blog’s main page. So I guess this is finally the time I actually publish an answer instead of messaging people back.

The solution to this is pretty easy, and that solution [sadly] is iframes. My reason for using them is that all Ask pages on Tumblr currently use iframes anyway. You can either right-click, view source on your own Ask page and find and copy Tumblr’s iframe markup yourself or you can just copy and paste the following code, replacing YOURBLOG.TUMBLR.COM with your own blog’s URL:

<h2><a href="">Ask me anything</a></h2>
<p><iframe frameborder="0" scrolling="no" width="100%" height="149" src="http://www.tumblr.com/ask_form/YOURBLOG.TUMBLR.COM" style="background-color:transparent; overflow:hidden;" id="ask_form"></iframe><!--[if IE]><script type="text/javascript">document.getElementById('ask_form').allowTransparency=true;</script><![endif]--></p>

Note that is by no means the ultimate solution to the above problem (using PHP to fetch the form would be a far greater option) but seeing how Tumblr’s Ask page makes use of iframes and how nearly all the people who ever ask me a question go straight to the Ask URL anyway, I don’t see using iframes for this as a major problem.

Hope this helps any other people who were interested in doing this with their own Ask box.

Oh, and if you have any other questions (be it personal or technical), feel free to ask away! :-)

Your blogs now comes with an optimized iPhone layout!
And a damn nice looking one at that.
This should be a huge improvement when browsing Tumblr blogs from the iPhone — and we’re building similar views for BlackBerry’s, Android, and more. Stay tuned.
If your theme already looks great on mobile devices, you can disable this feature by unchecking Customize → Advanced → Use optimized layout on mobile devices.

I totally beat Tumblr to their own announcement.
And it&#8217;s themeable, maybe I&#8217;ll make an attempt at a custom theme after my dissertation and coursework are all handed in.
